Our focus was to raise player retention numbers, specifically D1-D7 DAU. One of the key aspects that we identified needed changes was creating the home screen. We decided the best approach would be to create a modular home screen. This would help the app in 3 ways.
Enable live ops to A/B test which modules work the best
Bucket players and show them different modules based on the player types we identified
Allow our recommendation engine to work behind the scenes to show them new puzzle packs they might be interested in.
We did extensive competitive analysis to determine how other apps, who specialized in selling only one type of commodity, were able to vary their messaging and add interests for the player.
After we had a wide spectrum of options we narrowed them down the ones that would work best for our player demographic.
We identified 10 unique modules, each with a specific purpose , like aiding on puzzle pack discovery and nudging players to make an initial small purchase.
We designed the entire life cycle of the player to determine which combinations of modules the player would see and when.
The idea was simple.
Show players relevant puzzle packs, nudge them to make progressively higher purchases, but still retaining their trust.
We created a prototype to show how the modules would work with in our app.
